Highlights from the Week of November 4th

  • Tea and Poetry; Read “Trees” by Joyce Kilmer from Favorite Poems of Childhood.
  • In Beast Academy. Chapter 2, Sums. Additional practice with number lines.
  • Explode the Code (2 pages).
  • Read biographies of George and Martha Washington.
  • Drew a chipmunk and used watercolors in our sketch book. Started winter trees cut out and the 3D hand artwork.
  • Story of the World Chapter 7, Hammurabi and the Babylonians. Listened ahead to changes in Africa and the Story of Ananzi the Spider from Nigeria.
  • Reading aloud “A Year of Ms. Agnes” by Kirkpatrick Hill.
  • Reading aloud “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.” By JK Rowling
  • Start setting up to observe the life cycle of ladybugs. Ordered larvae.
  • Start monitoring daylight hours in preparation for the winter solstice. Also added temperature.
  • In our math story in the Life of Fred Edgewood, Chapter 17 review of functions .

  • Sea Monkey experiment Artemia Salina: We changed the water and lost our colony. The experiment ended.

  • Tea and Poetry; Read Jabberwocky (again)and Custard the Dragon from Favorite Poems of Childhood.
  • In Beast Academy Chapter 2, the number line and continue to practice regrouping from Chapter 1. Practice pages online and/or in the practice book.
  • Reading aloud “A Year of Ms. Agnes” by Kirkpatrick Hill.
  • Reading aloud “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” By JK Rowling.
  • We started a review of the Ancient World Chapter 5-7, The Egyptians and the Jewish people and the Babylonians in the Story of the World.
  • We started our Sea Monkey experiment Artemia Salina. We surprisingly have a small group of adults. We can observe male and female and they are mating!
  • Continued to make weather observations.
  • Explode the Code, Level 1.5 Pages 50-51.
  • Practice number writing.
  • In our math story in the Life of Fred Edgewood, half hour and quarter hour and adding two and three digit numbers, a gibbous moon.
  • In our reading instruction All about Reading, we start on Level 1; Chapter 34 (continued). Ck makes one sound, Read sentences and practice words.

  • In social and emotional learning, we practiced picking up our toys. Reread “Keeping our Head in the Group” and talked about what to do if someone doesn’t want to play.
  • Painting using salt.

Highlights of the Week of October 7th

  • Tea and Poetry; Read “A Tragedy” by Doris Web from Favorite Poems of Childhood.
  • In Beast Academy we reviewed Chapter 1, Practice pages online and/or in the practice book.
  • Reading aloud “A Year of Ms. Agnes” by Kirkpatrick Hill.
  • Reading aloud “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” by JK Rowling.
  • Located Alaska on a map and looked at animals and light.
  • We discussed Peru and made a Llama with a KiwiCrate.
  • We started a review of the Ancient World Chapter 3-4, The Egyptians in the Old Kingdom and Writing in the Story of the World.
  • We started our Sea Monkey experiment Artemia Salina. We are watching the tank but it appears we have lost the colony.
  • We are starting weather and keeping track of weather for 30 days.
  • Explode the Code, Level 1.5 Pages 47-49.
  • Used a Kiwicrate to build a mechanical sweeper.
  • In our math story in the Life of Fred Edgewood, different kinds of mistakes, rows and columns, right angles.
  • In our reading instruction All about Reading, we start on Level 1; Chapter 34. Ck makes one sound, made flip books to practice words.

  • Went on a nature walk and discussed annuals and perennials and picked up many seasonal tree nuts.

  • Read aloud passage from Writing with Ease for comprehension-Trumpet of the Swan-EB White.
  • In social and emotional learning, we practiced greeting people.
  • Read herself “Rhyming Dust Bunnies”, Short Stories “The Runt Pig” and “Fish” from her primer. “Llama, Llama and the Bully Goat”, “The Hot Bunny Cakes”, and “Pigeon goes to School”.
  • Made Halloween decorations for the front door.

The Eqyptians wrote in stone,

and the Sumerians in clay.

The picture writing was cuneiform,

Eqyptians also used papyrus scrolls,

and we use paper to this day.
